DescriptionThe pki Challenge was Europe's largest PKI interoperability project, and achieved its aim of identifying, addressing and overcoming issues of interoperability between different vendors.
The project ran between January 2001 and April 2003, was managed by eema and a 13-strong management consortium, and funded by the Swiss Government and the European Commission (under the 'Information Society Technology' Programme (1998-2002)).

Final Report (a comprehensive technical document incorporating technical details)Having achieved the project's aim of identifying, addressing and overcoming PKI interoperability issues within the vendor community, there were many additional conclusions and recommendations emanating from the project and the final report that we wanted to communicate to the various communities. This led to the following three reports ...Best Practice for PKI Usersprovides technical guidance to organisations wishing to benefit from the services delivered by PKI products, but who also wish to deploy and use PKI in a manner that maximises the chances of interoperability with other PKIs. The paper includes recommendations on the use of simple directory structures, simple certificates profiles and firewall configurations amongst others.
Recommendations for PKI vendors considers the implications for the vendor community in light of the conclusions of the pkiC, and makes recommendations about the features and levels of support for standards that PKI products should exhibit to encourage interoperability between users of different vendors' products. The paper includes recommendations on the minimum set of components in the Directory structure, key management issues, certificate validation and suggested standards adherence, amongst others.
Challenges for the PKI Industry is aimed at standards bodies, the European Commission and other groups and participants with an interest in this area, and outlines some of the technical challenges still facing the industry. Issues to be resolved include the proliferation of available standards and the need for a common repository system for public key certificate distribution and retrieval.
